The KompostWerke Rhein-Sieg GmbH & Co. KG (KRS) operates a composting plant at the location Swisttal-Miel. Up to now, the plant consisted of a composting under a BRV-procedure as well as further open and roofed areas. Because of the increase of the amount of bio-waste the processing capacity was extended by the construction of a separate tunnel composting plant.
The new plant consists of a closed area for unloading and storage, a directly attached area for mechanical processing of the bio-waste plus 9 composting tunnels. The disinfection and the rotting process of biodegradable waste takes place in the composting tunnels. A biological filter cleans the extracted air of the hall and of the composting tunnels. After composting, the compost is transported into the storage hall by conveyor technology. The mechanical compost treatment (fine processing) also takes place in the storage hall. The produced compost is used in agricultural sector as a high-quality fertiliser.
In civil and infrastructure work, two existing rainwater retention and storage basins were stripped down. These were replaced by an underground reservoir under the asphalt surface and a reservoir above the composting tunnels. The storage basins serve to supply the two composting facilities as well as the extinguishing water supply. In addition, an infiltration ditch was built. The work also included ground improvement by vibro displacement, as well as the dismantling and construction of supply and disposal pipelines and the asphalt surfaces.
