Green waste composting at the Leppe central landfill site

Project period

2015 until 2016

Client

BAV – Bergischer Abfallwirtschaftsverband

Task and implementation

Since 1997, the Bergischer Abfallwirtschaftsverband has been operating an open windrow composting facility for garden and park waste at the former Leppe central landfill site. When a tunnel composting facility for biowaste was planned at the same site, it was necessary to relocate the facility for green waste.

The new facility we designed is located on an area of about 9,000 m² on the temporary intermediate surface cover of the landfill. It has a treatment capacity of up to 10,400 Mg/a and consists of a receiving area, the windrow areas for composting, a storage area, eight covered storage boxes and an area where compost and biomass are processed. The green waste is first collected and shredded by a mobile shredder. Using a wheel loader, the material is mixed, homogenised and applied to the neighbouring rotting areas in the form of trapezoidal heaps. In the course of the rotting process, it is turned up to three times. Afterwards, the finished compost is sieved and temporarily stored for
